Introduction: Meet Barry Hess

PLAY THE “ON THE GO” AUDIO VERSION OF THE INTRODUCTION

I am more than proud to offer myself as a libertarian candidate for Governor, and most especially in these times of harsh political divisions. I am offering the People of Arizona a candidate who adheres to the libertarian philosophy that founded this incredible and unique nation, with no agenda other than service to the People. Although I have thrown myself into Arizona politics since 1999, I am not a politician, and I am not hamstrung by party agendas dictated out of Washington, DC.

Here’s why I am the best possible choice for Arizonans who want to return to ‘normal’ and be rid of the excessive fear-mongering we all suffer from; right now, the battle lines between Republican and Democrat Party leadership and membership have been drawn, and both claim ownership to ‘half’ of the People. The battle is to get one of the ‘other’ team to vote with your team. Of course there are lots of promises made to party defectors, and the game goes on. Nothing changes at all; each team trying to gain dominance by the narrowest margin. The perceived ‘power’ of the Party is all that matters to them, and if a candidate wants their Party’s ‘help’ in their campaign, they have to agree to do what they are told.

This is why only a libertarian can correct the political vote-swapping and sweetheart-contract awards. I’m asking you for your vote, and your support if you want your government to serve you, the way it was designed. Give me the power to veto bad legislation, and I can guarantee I will use it.

“I get hung up on the being free thing, not labels others use to describe me. Parties mean nothing, the philosophy that you adhere to means everything.”

I was 12 when I took my first job, 3 years it became one of the largest paper routes in Springfield, Ohio. I sold it for several times the average adult income at the time. That may have been when I became addicted to entrepreneurship. I went to college after 2 ½ years of high-school and got to work my way through graduation from Fordham University. To do that I took a variety of jobs from scrubbing the university’s restrooms, acting, and managing the Campus Activities Center. I also offered study assistance and travel tours to earn what I needed. My classmates elected me class president in both high school and college, and they were humbling experiences. I decided that I did not want to practice law about half-way through my studies, and wanted a different kind of life, and it’s been a privilege to have, planned, developed, founded, built, sold, and lost several small businesses over several industries over the last 40 years here in Arizona.

On a more personal level, in 1980, I was supposed to spend a couple of days In Phoenix to visit family on my way to my regional directorship of insurance fraud for a major insurance company in San Diego, but I never left. I decided to answer a sales ad here in Phoenix, instead. I wanted to learn how the professional salespeople (*not politicians) became proficient. I wound up a top producer for 14 years, and a business-owner serving customers for over 40 years without complaint. That led to becoming a sales trainer which led to becoming a motivational speaker and national convention speaker.

In 2000, I decided it was time to offer myself for Public service here in Arizona. I left the Republican Party in 1986 to reflect my personal beliefs as a libertarian. From my perspective, the Republicans were exactly like the Democrats—they just argue over which of them gets to hold the bull whip that strikes every taxpayer and Citizen’s back.

I’m not big on talking about ‘me’, but I want thoughtful voters to know that I’ve done some stuff, and that “I’m a ‘People’; one amongst them, and unlike any of my competitors, I know the struggles of the average person. I prefer to talk about what I want for Arizonans, and the course of action I will take as Arizona’s next Governor. I know the government hindrances that stand in the way of entrepreneurs, and I intend to eliminate most of them. I am well-aware that small businesses are the heart of America, and the backbone of our economy, and far too many have been destroyed by the government’s illegal over-reaction to the virus.

What is disheartening is that the issues haven’t changed since 2000, and only the over-reaction to the coronavirus has been added to the list. That means not a single challenge has been solved under either Republican or Democrat leadership. Not a single problem has been resolved, not even one. And if a Republican or a Democrat should be elected next November, everything will be the same, again.

Campaign Summary

PLAY THE “ON THE GO” AUDIO VERSION OF THE OVERVIEW

Why I am the BEST CHOICE for all Arizonans: Because Rs and Ds can’t work together. They spend all of their attention on ‘beating the other guy and his/her party, instead of tending to looking out for their constituent’s best interests. We’ve had Republicans and Democrats in the Governor’s Office since 2002—and nothing has substantively changed at all. They don’t want to fix the border, Attend to our road system, or improve our failed state school system.

In one way or another, our legislators have been influenced to serve their contributor’s wants. As Governor, I will be able to sort out the favoritism and will only accept legislation that fits inside the constitution(s). People from both of those parties sometimes have good ideas, and I am the only one who will be free to choose to back only those laws that benefit the People without fear of party repercussions.

The LAST thing I will mention is that I am fully-informed, and prepared to take on the challenges we face. I have inter-acted with the holders of virtually every office of significance in our government, and I’m aware of how it all works. I do have experience. That’s exactly why the last thing I would want on my resume at this point in time would be to claim ‘Successful government experience’; because to do so would be an admission that I could thrive in an very corrupt organization; and that only draw questions as to my own personal character—and I won’t have that. I come with a purpose, and that purpose is to do everything I can to facilitate a return to American values and inspiration.

I ask you to consider me as your choice for Governor next November. You have my promise that I will champion constitutional adherence and I will deliver what my competitors cannot.

As always, I remain at your service—

The Campaign Issues at Large:

PLAY THE “ON THE GO” AUDIO VERSION OF THE ISSUES

There was no question to anyone paying attention that the 2020 election was incorrectly reported. As the audits continue, they continue to turn up a myriad of ways the election was corrupted. While I didn’t support either of the two candidates in question, I do have a vested interest wanting to have confidence in our elections. I do support full forensic auditing; every cycle if need be.

This is a many-faceted issue, so let me make myself clear, I support the free-flow of goods, services, and labor between all individuals. I am a libertarian, and my primary focus is on respecting, and protecting the rights of each individual, including the Right to travel unimpeded, upon Public roadways and thoroughfares.

I had to preface my statement to make it clear that ‘open borders’ does not mean ‘no borders’, but it does mean that if anyone wants to come into the ‘land of the free’; and they are clear of communicable disease and/or representing a threat to Arizona’s Citizens; there’s no reason at all to deny them the opportunity to further contribute to our economy.

Given that there are those politically-motivated interests who would wreak havoc on the innocent Public, and do represent a threat to Public safety it is essential that ‘We’ know who is coming in, and why. Unfortunately, as long as there are governments claiming and dominating territorial jurisdiction, and as long as governments attack other governments, physical border security is a rational part of government’s tasks.

There are other considerations, for instance; each year around 160-170 people die in Arizona’s deserts, trying to get to America, a final act of desperation for many. We cannot tolerate this inhumanity, nor can we tolerate the blatant abuse of taxpayer’s funds by those who have come only to take advantage of ridiculous laws that promise ‘free money’ that act as a magnet for them.

So, what is ‘my’ solution? Thanks for asking. I think we have to secure the borders, to actually stop bad actors from coming here and, by opening access, we take away any reason for good people to come here ‘illegally’. I do think it’s important to know ‘who’ is visiting Arizona.

Although Arizona could offer State Citizenship, and through the reciprocity Clause, “American Citizenship”, I wouldn’t support that at all. It’s up to Congress to determine the steps to U.S. Citizenship, and I will leave it in their hands.

Something that needs to be confronted is the drain on Public resources by those coming here to take from, not contribute to, our economy. The solution I favor the most is simple, if people want to work here, that’s fine. They simply request a work pass. They won’t have to be paid under the table, or gipped out of pay at the end of the day by unscrupulous employers threatening to call I.C.E. on them.

I will propose that if anyone coming in wants to work here, they need only register for a work pass. A work pass allows them to work wherever they want. Along with the pass, I will propose a 5% work fee. The funds would go into an account specifically to provide for the needs and wants of international visitors, such as education, or medical attention. The account should be managed by people from among those visiting, with only limited oversight by government. The responsibility would rest with the account managers, not Citizens of Arizona.

I do not believe any kind of blanket ‘amnesty’ would be appropriate, and I am not referring to Citizenship with voting rights. At the same time, Arizona will be far more peaceful and human beings can come out of the shadows. My proposal will include a 90-day grace period for all currently illegal residents to register with the State, and if appropriate, request work permits. If they don’t present a threat, they can return to their homes.

My proposal is Not ‘amnesty’, and it’s not Citizenship. It stands to reason that the only ones who will not register are those who do represent a threat to Arizonans, and at the end of the 90-day grace period, any unregistered visitors will be immediately deported and not allowed readmission for 5 years.

This proposal leaves no reason for anyone, other than bad people, to cross our border and illegally trespass on private property. It will put the coyotes out of business, and cripple the human trafficking trade. We’ll secure our border ourselves. I won’t wait for the federal government to do something.

There is no honest or moral justification for the institutionalizing of what is clearly nothing more than theft-by-government. Personal income and personal property cannot be taxed and I want to end ALL income taxes in Arizona. Just a simple transaction tax not to exceed 9%, without exceptions or deductions would stimulate our economy from the ground up, rather than the reverse. The only other tax that should be allowed is the ‘fuel/road Maintenance’ tax. The fuel tax makes sense to attend to the maintenance costs of our road system, and is as ‘fair’ as it gets because users pay in accord with their use. (*Electric cars present a question that should be addressed). Such a tax structure would turn legislator’s heads to making more Arizonans prosperous to create more transactions. All groups will benefit from such a plan except the current grifters and leeches.

I don’t know why there is any discussion in regard to the absolute, inherent Right of each individual to arm themselves as they see fit, without restriction; except as to age and or parental consent. In an armed society, either by discouragement or demise, the bad guys really do go away. Early Americans were very congenial with people they met because it didn’t make sense to pick a fight with them. I would, of course want to release all those folks held in our jails and prisons for mere possession of a firearm when no violence or threats are involved.

I am a libertarian, and I know the free market is always a better alternative than government. This is because in a free market the service or product provider is trained to first keep the customers happy with your service; second, to keep costs down, and third, to make the operation as efficient as possible. However, in the case for private prisons, I have to diverge completely, because of experience. Prisons don’t just pop up to compete in the market to house prisoners, so we effectively have a monopoly being sold to a handful of contractors. This process works against the principle of free market competition, and serves only to attempt to absolve government from liability for wrongful, or neglectful care of prisoners. Prisoners escaped here in AZ, because of a lack of security—they killed two campers and were recaptured and sent back. 2 people got fired from the prison. That was it.

I do believe that if the state takes physical possession and control of an individual, the state is solely and completely liable for any damages or harm that comes to them.

I believe every individual has absolute authority as to what goes into, or what they do to their bodies; at the same time they individually remain responsible for what their body does. Release all possession convicts where no violence or threats were part. We need to put AZs families back together—not keep tearing them apart.

I do believe that we need to revert to the notion that those charged with a crime must be considered innocent, until proven guilty. In today’s world we have a Media that attempts to further a political narrative by pronouncing any who contradict their political narrative ‘guilty’ in the court of public opinion. That needs to stop, too.

The biggest challenge we have in terms of crime, is a government that is now wholly-immersed in corruption and graft. We cannot allow our government to steal, lie or rob us, and not expect the Public to follow their lead.

The only real crimes are against individuals and/or their property, and these acts should be punished, but statutory ‘crimes’ generally fall short of criminality.

I should mention my deep concern for the light sentences of child predators and that I will seek to make Arizona the last place those criminals will want to be discovered.

What has hurt AZ the most is the manipulation and loss of spending power of our national currency. I will support a secondary system of gold-backed Arizona medallions if necessary, because the Federal Reserve notes have lost virtually all of their spending power. The value that was lost was not replaced; to the detriment of the working Arizonan. I will support alternatives that preserve their spendable value for the Citizen, so I have no problem adding crypto currencies as lawful alternative.

It’s no secret that I have little or no confidence in our current government schools to produce functional graduates. What drives me is knowing that the students are the people who will be running this place when we’re too old and gray to do anything about it. I want Arizona’s graduates to be ten times smarter and more competent than ‘we’ are.

If we are to have brick and mortar schools in Arizona’s future, I will insist on there being a prominent sign over the door of every physical government school, and prominently displayed on the computer screens and materials of our distance-learners. I’ve thought about it, and it should read: “Our Mission Statement: To graduate competent young men and women capable of going out into the World and making their own way without ever burdening others.” That’s what I’m after, and I want to remind students and teachers alike, every day.

Of course, this means I want to make some very serious changes in curriculum. The focus of our elementary schools must be on the basics, such as mastering our language (*Americanized English); Competence in reading and writing skills; Mathematics; Computer Sciences; Logic and Reason; Critical thinking; Entrepreneurship; Home Economics (*It’s not just for girls anymore); Healthy habits and the importance of Exercise; Social Skills (*How to be polite and courteous); and most importantly, Civics (*A firm grasp on constitutional limitations is essential in a society that aspires to freedom, and individual liberty.

I’ve always encouraged ‘home-schooling’ because I’ve seen the results, and they are undeniable in their results. Home-schoolers graduate far more competently than those from government schools. Only a competitive school system can maintain stability because other schools take note of the other’s successes (*or failures), and have the flexibility to do what their better competitors do immediately, to enhance their own results.

At the very start of all this, I wrote an open letter to the Governor briefly advising him that no position in government was ever ceded authority to mandate the behavior of its Citizens, and to avoid overstepping the authority of his office. I offered clear suggestions in tackling the prospect of a pandemic, and now, as history shows, when those suggestions were followed by other countries, harms were minimized. I also urged the allowance for those seeking alternative treatments. He paid no heed. Three things hadn’t yet come to light (*, and I will add them in this summary). People ask me what I would have done had I been Governor; here’s my perspective.

I would have immediately notified the Public about the coronavirus and urged them to take whatever steps they thought appropriate to protect themselves. I would point out those groups that are identified as ‘high risk’, and urge them to learn how to strengthen their immune systems, and to do whatever they can to minimize whatever condition puts them at higher risk. For those in high risk groups, I would make all known treatments available. I would invite knowledgeable doctors and professionals to speak to the public and offer advice. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to protect themselves. If they want to wear a mask; obsessively sanitize everything; socially-distance themselves; or even self-isolate; that’s what they should do.

There never would have been an involuntary shutdown of businesses, nor any demands or requirements put upon business owners. Finally, I would have urged the Public to do some research on effectiveness of ‘alternative’ treatments and cures (*HCQ, Ivermectin, and others). There were no ‘vaccines’ at that time, but I would probably have made the treatments available to the Public for ‘free’ (*they cost pennies per dose) for the general prophylactic welfare of all Arizonans. While I certainly would have considered what federal ‘officials’ had to say, I would have rejected any ‘orders’ from Washington, DC.

What we have and are experiencing, proves I had the right plan. Now, with the rampant deaths from the experimental vaccines, and the threat of politically-mandated injections to unwilling subjects, I can state very clearly that no such power, or authority was ever ceded to any level or office in our government by the People; the same is true in ‘ordering’ lockdowns, or shutdowns, and I won’t play along.

As your Governor, I’ll guarantee you I will not allow any notion of mandatory injections (*Your body; YOUR choice—otherwise, it fits the description of rape), or recognize, or require any sort of ‘health passport’. I will protect Arizonans from anyone who seeks mandatory injections of an experimental treatment that has as one of its side effects—death. Your health is your business.

The decadence of our current society is untenable. Families are routinely destroyed, children without fathers (*mostly) give them no examples of their role in civilization, this division is further encouraged by government schools, and the influence of the personal beliefs of the teacher. Few know that I proposed keeping the state within its constitutional requirement to provide free, or nearly-free education to all Arizonans using a less expensive distance-learning, and local physical activities model to replace the antiquated system we use now, and will remove excessive influence from teachers, as well as protect those who are susceptible to communicable disease.

It’s out in the open these days. My studies of the Soviet Union show that the only difference between our present and their past is that our stuff is shinier. I do have a proposal to shake the corruption out of our offices with a strong inducement. Obviously, I am not going to spell it out ahead of time.

One of the great atrocities committed in our lifetimes is Congress assuming that it has any such authority as to pronounce any makers of any products offered to the Public ‘immune’ from prosecution for any damages their products might inflict on users. While government itself was given immunity in some cases; it is not something it can dole out to favored companies, or industries. I understood the rationale behind it, but it was abused from the very beginning in the 1980s. Restoring liabilities, at least in Arizona, can only aid in encouraging manufacturers to produce a better product, to the benefit of those choosing to use it.

What I would like to push for would be liability for damages; prescription drug advertising restrictions on Public venues and platforms; and a clear understanding that no office of government, including the Governorship, has any authority to ‘mandate’, or discriminate among Citizens, at all. There will be no mandatory anything from my office. I understand that I will be the servant of the People.

While libertarians have been exposing media bias for decades more recently all Americans can now easily see the extraordinary level of propaganda being foisted upon the public by what they thought were trustworthy sources. It only makes sense to compare what the networks tell you to what the alternative media sources are saying. My administration will deliver the transparency that the Republicans and Democrats have promised, then abandoned. I intend to energize the State information site to make it user friendly (*It is not, at present) and to give statements on all legislation directly, not spun through the media. The media giants are all political these days, and everything seems to revolve around their respective political teams. There’s no way the Public can ‘win’, only political parties can win. Just to be clear, ‘my’ team is the team that plays for the good of every Arizonan.

The propaganda wars are not lost, so don’t give up hope. There are two things I will push to resurrect; they are the ‘Fairness Doctrine’, and the ‘Truth in advertising’ laws that politicians repealed so they could lie with impunity to the People.

The Fairness Doctrine was simple, and it required that Media give BOTH sides of controversy—it worked very well when in use.

I want to bring back the Truth in Advertising laws, but with a twist; that being that instead of government reaping the damages awarded, I want to give legal standing and damage awards to any who have seen or heard the falsehoods, and impose a mandatory fine for the offenders. I would propose $10,000.00.

I believe these 2 simple steps will go a long way in reversing the trend toward ‘fake news’ being foist upon each and every one of us.

Too Many Laws

The Roman historian Tacitus said it best; “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” And History proves it. The 2 major things that I am totally passionate about are eliminating all personal taxes, and as many useless, outdated or anti-freedom laws as we can. I will be aiming to eliminate ½ of all the laws currently on AZs books by the end of my first term, and I will veto any and all laws that do not specify a real need; establish a constitutional thread to give them authorization; or do not present a definitive solution to the asserted problem.
