The New York Times has a profile of my Congressional race in today's paper - “In Southwest, a Shifting Away From Party Ties.” It's all about how voters in the southwest US are moving away from Rs and Ds, and the Republican's campaign even mentions how important the libertarian vote is becoming.

This is the kind of garbage that passes for modern, professional journalism?

What a load of crap! With media bias this blatant, no wonder main stream media readership and subscribership is down.

Let's see just how bad of a job Mr. Paul Davenport of the Associated Press has failed to uphold the standards of his profession.

An 839 word article in which 479 words are devoted to Janet (57% of the total), 330 words for Len (39%) and a mere 12 words for Barry (1.4%). The sole mention being: "Libertarian Barry Hess also is on the Nov. 7 general election ballot.". What kind of crap is that. And this guy calls himself a journalist? No wonder the main stream media is in the state it is. Hell, this guy could work for the AZ Republic.

Barry IS the Libertarian nominee for Governor. One of THREE candidates on the ballot. On the ballot, in the voter guide, during the debates, he is one third of the people's options to earn their vote. Does Mr. Davenport care? Doesn't look like it.

Did Mr. Davenport contact Mr. Hess to inquire as to his position on education? NO! Did Mr. Davenport even attempt to research Barry's postion on education? Sure as heck doesn't look like it.

With reporting like this, it is understandable how one can only question the journalistic integrity of one Mr. Davenport and the AP for allowing reporting like this under their watch.

We've been focusing on the media bias for a while, and I'm about to go record a radio spot, already paid for by the fund-raising... But noticing the positive mentions are just as important.

Just a brief note from this political pigeon on Thursday's gubernatorial debate on KAET's Horizon, moderated by the ever-affable Michael "I swear it ain't a toupee" Grant. Is this winged wiseacre alone in thinking that perennial Libertarian candidate Barry Hess won the verbal tussle like a blue-ribboned porker at the state fair?

Hess seemed intelligent, good-humored, and capable of doing more than spouting off the same ol', same ol' that viewers of such televised donnybrooks usually get. And, unlike Len "Premarital" Munsil and Governor Janet "I'm 36 points ahead!" Napolitano, Hess at least acted as if he'd had a cuppa joe before airtime.

Sure, most of that Libertarian stuff is strictly for schoolteachers who read too much Ayn Rand, but Hess was saying things neither Munsil nor Nappy have the cojones to state, like maybe we should release everyone who's in prison for smoking a jay. He even addressed Latinos in Spanish at the end of the broadcast! Political poison in a state so rabidly anti-Mexican.

Yeah, Hess only polls 3 percent. And yeah, the dood lists endorsements by professional wrestlers on his Web site. But boring he ain't. For that alone, Barry scores points with this persnickety pelican.

For what it's worth, I just sent the following letter to the editor of
the AZ Republic.

While basically libertarian in my political and economic views, I had
never heard of Barry Hess prior to Thursday’s televised debate
between the gubernatorial candidates. Mr. Hess clearly came off the
winner. While Mr. Munsil did a terrific job in documenting Governor
Napolitano’s abysmal failure as Governor, he offered nothing new as a
solution; just the same old tired Republican rhetoric which is never
implemented once a Republican takes office. At least the Democrats are
honest about their treachery – they tell you upfront about all the
immoral and unconstitutional programs they are going to implement. The
Republicans tell you what you want to hear and then do the opposite
once they take office.

If Arizona is going to be salvaged from its swirling around the toilet
bowl, it is going to take people like Mr. Hess that are truly willing
to take a principled stand to get the government off of our backs and
out of our wallets, and stand by their oath of office to uphold the
Arizona and U.S. Constitutions.
Not one single governor in the United States stands against illegal
immigration or attempts to enforce Federal or local laws in our states.
They, in fact, aid, abet and assist illegal aliens. By doing this, they
violate their oath of office in addition to committing a felony. It’s
time to put an end to this, along with the state income tax, government
schools, and all the other socialist schemes of the Republicans and
Democrats. You have a real choice on Nov. 7, Arizona: Barry Hess or
more “dialogue” about “immigration reform” which are code words
for more of the same no matter which branch of the Republican/Democratic
party is in office. What’s it going to be?

Dear Ken;

Just so there is no question, I want you to know that this message is being sent to many members of the press/media and other interested parties.

In speaking with Mr. Tupper today, it came up that the Arizona Republic had run full page profiles on Len Munsil and Janet Napolitano in the last two Sunday editions of your paper and that "mine" was to run tomorrow--Monday. What's up with that? Monday? Doesn't Sunday have different circulation numbers? Could such a thing be called "fair and equal" coverage?

My interpretation of such an event could only be as advertising for the Democrat/Republican Party candidates in violation of a myriad of campaign laws.

I find all this a bit odd since when Matthew Benson called, we only talked briefly and he assured me that he would be calling back to do an interview for my profile--he hasn't. If the Republic plans on such a run, I insist that it refrain from doing so since he did not do an interview and it could only be construed as fraud upon the public.

Hess Raising Funds To Combat Media Bias in the Arizona Republic

The Hess for Governor campaign today announced a new fund raising effort to purchase radio and print ads specifically attacking the blatant and shameless media bias of the Arizona Republic, the newspaper of record in Arizona.

Proceeds from this fund raising drive will be used to purchase spots in reputable media sources that have fulfilled their civic and moral duty to completely, accurately, and fairly report on the race for Governor of Arizona. These funds will not be used to attack the position or programs of Janet Napolitano (D) or Len Munsil (R). The ads will specifically target the media bias and the way the Arizona Republic has abused the right the public has to all of the facts about all of the candidates, and not just those that support the Republic's editorial biases and desire to steer government policy and public opinion.

Libertarian Gubernatorial Candidate Barry Hess today challenged the Methodology, Accuracy, and Results of SurveyUSA/KPNX-TV’s flawed poll. According to Mr. Hess, the survey is flawed in numerous ways that render the results meaningless.

The problems are:

1. Limited population: The survey relies on a statistically insignificant population of only 472. This is outside the norm of statistical significance for populations for statewide questions and is too small to accurately reflect the opinion of the state.

NOTICE: This is a recent exchange (9-15-06) between Arizona Libertarian candidate, Barry Hess, and Ken Western, editor for the state's paper of record, The Arizona Republic. It was in response to an article by Matthew Benson published on 9-14-06 on the front page of the newspaper featuring only the publicly-financed campaigns of incumbent Democrat, Janet Napolitano and Republican nominee, Len Munsil. Mr. Hess' campaign was only given slight mention on page 18-A on the same day. In keeping with his thinly-veiled threat to "marginalize" Mr. Hess, the editorial page again excluded him from a write-up by Mr. Rob Robb, in the op-ed section on Sunday, 9-17-06. From all appearances, it appears that the Arizona Republic may be in violation of campaign finance election laws and attempting to influence a public election should such 'coverage' be deemed advertising for the two public tax dollar financed campaigns it covered. Mr. Hess is the only candidate who refused to participate in public financing.
